A Record of Family Recipes

For years I have tried to get my Aunt Sally to compile all of her recipes onto a disk. I think I have finally accomplished this. There are a few of her dishes that I am able to duplicate, but there are so many that I would love master.

So many of my memories are attached to food, meals my mother prepared, dishes my aunt has made famous and the comfort foods from my grandma's kitchen. Each one of them triggers different memories of family, fun and a simpler time.

I would encourage you all to work toward your family food history. Not only will pass down wonderful dishes, your family history will live on through the memories attached to these dishes.

Aunt Sally's Pork Roast

I don’t want you all to think that I will only be sharing recipes from food network. Now I must admit that I am a huge fan of the shows on there, but there are a number of family recipes that I cherish and would love to share with everyone.

One of those recipes is Aunt Sally’s pork roast. I love this dish. Making it evokes memories of Family Sunday dinners and cool weather. It is what I consider to be one of my comfort foods because I have so many fond memories tied to it, like my father and grandfather arguing over who gets the last piece. Any how, I invite you to try this recipe. I hope that you and your family enjoy it as much as me and mine.

1 5 pound pork roast
2 Peeled garlic cloves
1 yellow onion
1 green pepper
½ cup of apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon of Salt
1 teaspoon of Pepper
1 teaspoon of Garlic Powder

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Once you have washed your roast, place it in a roasting pan. With a small knife make small holes on the top and sides of the meat. Take the garlic cloves and cut them into thin strips. Insert the garlic into the holes in the roast. Slice your onion and green pepper and place at the bottom of your roasting pan. Pour the vinegar on your roast allowing it to seep into the garlic filled slices. Finally mix your salt, pepper and garlic powder together to create a rub. Apply this mixture on the top and sites of your roast. Allow your roast to bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Note: The vinegar adds a bite to this dish. If this is not something you enjoy, you may want to use it more conservatively.

Enjoy!

First Baking Experiment

Okay, so I have been a little lax after starting this blog. I’ve been focusing my attentions elsewhere. Well, I am back and refocusing my energy here. First of, let me just say that I love to cook. It is definitely one of my passions. However, I am not much for baking. So I want to share my first baking experiment with you.

The recipe comes from the Barefoot Contessa a show on the food network. The recipe is for lemon pound cake. I wanted to start with something easy and pound cakes are pretty basic. I must say it was much easier than I anticipated and turned out wonderfully.

This is the link for the recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_21411,00.html

To confirm the success of my experiment, I took one to the cakes to work and my co-workers loved them. This recipe will make everyone think that you are a world class baker. I highly suggest that you try it!
